Understanding The Seventh Commandment | Adultery

I.  INTRODUCTION

We live in a sex-crazed, sex-obsessed culture.  Everywhere you look in American culture you see sex.  What does the Bible have to say to our situation?  

II.  TEXT

Exodus 20:14 -- The seventh commandment, "Do not murder (CSB)."

III.  HOW SERIOUS IS THE SEVENTH COMMANDMENT?

Deuteronomy 22:22 -- The OT punishment for murder was capital punishment.

Matthew 5:32 -- The New Testament punishment for murder is divorce.

Ephesians 5:5 -- The eternal punishment for adultery is hell.  

IV.  WHAT IS ADULTERY?

Phil Johnson’s definition:  “Adultery is voluntary sexual intercourse between a married person and a partner other than their legitimate, lawful spouse.”

Matthew 5:27-28 -- Adultery involves more than the physical act; it includes any sexual activity outside of marriage.  

1 Corinthians 6:13 -- The Greek word for "sexual immorality" is porneia.  It means Illicit sex including adultery, incest, premarital sex, or any extramarital arousal.

V.  HOW IS THE SEVENTH COMMANDMENT VIOLATED?

1) Extramarital sex.  Deut 5:18

2) Premarital sex.  1 Cor 7:8-9

3) Pornography.  Mt 5:28

4) Wayward glances.  Pr 4:25

5) Visiting strip clubs.  Job 31:1-2

6) Sexual fantasies.  Mt 5:8; Ps 19:14

7) Flirting with people other than your spouse.  Pr 6:27-29

8) Getting too close to someone other than your spouse.  Eph 5:17

9) Masturbation.  Pr 5:18-19

10) Prostitution.  Pr 23:27

11) Rape.  Deut 22:28-29; Lk 6:31

12) Homosexuality.  Lev 18:22

13) Bestiality.  Lev 18:23

14) Incest.  Lev 18:6

15) Neglecting our marriage.  1 Cor 7:5

16) Immodesty.  1 Tim 2:9-10

VI.  CONCLUSION

Eph 5:5 -- The punishment for sexual sin is hell.

But God offers forgiveness to adulterers to all those who repent and have faith in Jesus Christ.
