Five Facts About The Deity of Christ

Is Jesus Christ God?  Mormonism says He is a god, but not as great as God the Father.  Jehovah's Witnesses say he is not God, only an angel.  Judaism says "no."  Islam says he is only a prophet.  Unitarianism says he was merely a human being.  Christian Science says he was not God, but merely the highest human concept of the perfect man.  Atheism says He is not God because there is no God.

Christians believe that Jesus Christ is God.  Yesterday at Church Acadiana we studied one of the clearest verses in the Bible about the deity of Christ.

Colossians 2:9 "For the entire fullness of God's nature dwells bodily in Christ."

Let me point out five facts about the deity of Christ.

1) Christ possesses all of God's attributes.  "For the entire fullness of God's nature dwells bodily in Christ."  God's nature is His attributes.  The qualities that make Him who He is.  He is holy, loving, omnipotent, omniscient, omnipresent, eternal, immutable.  The word "entire" means all, or whole.  Christ possesses all of God's attributes.

2) Christ possesses God's attributes in their fullness.  "For the entire fullness of God's nature dwells bodily in Christ."  Christ not only possesses all of God's attributes, but in their fullness.  This makes Christ not merely a god, but coequal with God the Father.

3) Christ is God.  "For the entire fullness of God's nature dwells bodily in Christ."  The Greek word for "God's nature" refers not merely to God's attributes, but to His divine essence; to the things that make God who He is.  The very essence of God -- all that makes God who He is -- dwells bodily in Christ.

4) Christ will always be God.  "For the entire fullness of God's nature dwells bodily in Christ."  Not "dwelt," or "will dwell," but "dwells."  Present tense.  The word "dwells" means to permanently dwell; to be at home; to be permanently settled and present.  Christ was fully God when He walked the earth.  He is fully God today in heaven.  He will always be God.

5) Christ is fully God and fully human. "For the entire fullness of God's nature dwells bodily in Christ."  When Christ came to earth He took on a human body, but He did not give up His deity.  His humanity did not decrease His deity, and His deity did not diminish His humanity.  Christ is both fully God and fully human.  He was God on earth, and He is God in heaven.

Jesus Christ is God.  The Son of God.  Coequal and co-eternal with God the Father and God the Holy Spirit.  The second person in the Trinity.  He is the God of the Old Testament.  The God of creation.  The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.  He is the only true God.  He is worthy of our adoration, affection, and allegiance.
