Five Facts About The T.I.T.H.E.

Many Christians are unfamiliar with the Bible's teaching on tithing.  It can be summarized with five facts.

T -- Ten percent.  The word "tithe" means a tenth.  A tithe is not merely a donation of any amount to the church.  It is a donation of a specific amount to the church -- the first ten percent of your income.  This is a command for all Christians.  Malachi 3:10 "Bring the full tenth into the storehouse so that there may be food in my house. Test me in this way,” says the Lord of Armies. “See if I will not open the floodgates of heaven and pour out a blessing for you without measure."

I -- Invest in God's work.  The primary purpose of the tithe is to fund God's work through the local church.  Christ loves the church, died for the church, cares for the church, and is building the church.  The church is His body and bride.  It is God's primary means of accomplishing world redemption.  1 Corinthians 9:14 "In the same way, the Lord has commanded that those who preach the gospel should earn their living by the gospel."  Galatians 6:6 "Let the one who is taught the word share all his good things with the teacher."

T -- Teaches you to put God first in your life.  Money is God's primary competitor for your heart.  It will be your biggest challenge in life to love God more than money.  The tithe was set in place to help you surrender your finances to God's control.  When you commit to giving the first ten percent of your income to God, you are reminded that you are not in charge; your money belongs to God, and you are only a steward.  Deuteronomy 14:23 (TLB) "The purpose of tithing is to teach you to put God first in your life."

H -- He will bless you!  God promises to bless you greatly if you will tithe.   Malachi 3:10 "Bring the full tenth into the storehouse so that there may be food in my house. Test me in this way,” says the Lord of Armies. “See if I will not open the floodgates of heaven and pour out a blessing for you without measure."  Proverbs 3:9-10 "Honor the Lord with your possessions and with the first produce of your entire harvest; then your barns will be completely filled, and your vats will overflow with new wine."  You can't afford NOT to tithe.

E -- Eternal rewards.  When we give to God's kingdom, He promises to bless us not just here on earth, but in haven with eternal rewards.  Every time you tithe you are building up your heavenly reward.  1 Timothy 6:18-19 "Instruct them to do what is good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and willing to share, storing up treasure for themselves as a good foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of what is truly life."

I encourage you to begin tithing this month.  Go ahead and put God to the test.  He will bless you for it, and you will be a blessing to your church.
