The New Racism

Our goal as Christians must be the goal of Christ, a country that is safe from all forms of racism.  And while our nation has made greater strides in the battle against racism than any country in history, racism is still alive today.  But it is has taken a different shape than in the past.  An unexpected form.  Surprisingly, racism has made a comeback in the 21st century in the name equal rights for all.  Simply put, in our passionate quest to protect the rights of minorities, we have become increasingly discriminatory against the majority.  Welcome to the New Racism.  Below are some examples.  Let us be sure that we don’t fall prey to the sins of our nation’s past that are still haunting us today.

Racism is the refusal to allow someone to speak to the issue of racism unless he is a minority.

Racism is allowing people of one race to use a certain derogatory term, but refusing the same allowance to people of other races because of the color of their skin.

Racism is when a man of the majority race kills a man of a minority, and it is immediately assumed that the motive is racism rather than self-defense.

Racism is voting for a presidential candidate because of the color of his skin rather than his character and ideology.

Racism is when a business hires minorities to avoid the accusation of racism, rather than hiring on character and competence.

Racism is the assumption that a professional basketball team with a majority of white players in a majority-black league must have racist motivations.

Racism is when you blame your lack of success on racial injustice when there are those of the same race who are rising above the very same problems.

Racism is when you punish someone for life for a racist comment that they are sincerely apologetic about.

Racism is the assumptions that Republicans are racist, and Democrats are not.  (Don't forget that Abe Lincoln was a Republican!)

Racism is the assumption that white people are never the victims of racial discrimination.

Racism is throwing down the race card every time something doesn't go your way.

Racism is the assumption that racial discrimination is the only form of discrimination.  In our society, people are discriminated against for their religion, weight, gender, appearance, political views, age, and many other reasons.  Not everyone has been a victim of racism, but most people have been the object of one form of discrimination or another.

Racism is the assumption that you are too morally superior to ever act, think, or speak in a racist manner.
