My 5 Best Decisions as a Kid

Our task as parents is to disciple our kids -- to help them grow to full devotion to Jesus Christ.  We have a lot of wisdom as parents simply because we have experience.  We have learned by trial and error.  We can teach our kids what to do and what not to do simply by looking back at our own lives.  These are the 5 best decisions I made growing up.

  1. I did my best in school.  I got saved the summer before sixth grade, and that's when my schoolwork became extremely important to me.  From the sixth grade on through high school I was always one of the top students in my class.
  2. I didn't smoke, drink or do drugs.  I've never met a 50 year-old smoker who didn't want to quit.  When it came to drugs and alcohol, I was always afraid of getting hooked and then wrecking my life.  Aside from that, you can't be at your best when you're drugged up, and I want to be my best for God.  You can't love God with all your mind and strength if you're high.
  3. I didn't date until after high school.  I'm so thankful for the teachings of Joshua Harris in this area.  He gave me permission to opt out of the high school dating scene.  I decided to wait until I was ready for marriage to begin dating.
  4. I saved sex for marriage.  I avoided so much regret and hardship because of this one.
  5. I kept my relationship with Christ my top priority.  From the time I got saved in the sixth grade, I started devoting time to prayer and Bible study.  I made it a priority to stay close to Jesus and to grow stronger in Christ.
What are the best decisions you made as a kid?  Write them down and share them with your kids.
