The Dangerous Myth That People Are Born Gay

Ideas have consequences, even if they are bad ideas.  And there is one bad idea in our culture that is causing big problems -- especially for people of faith.  It's the idea that people are born gay.  It's a big assumption that many in our society have made, and it is an assumption that some people want to force all of us to make.  Because if people are assumed to be born gay, then the door is opened for gay people to demand legal protection as a minority.  If people are born gay, just as they are born a certain race and a certain gender, then it should be against the law to discriminate against gay people just as it is wrong to discriminate against people because of their race or gender.

And that's exactly what is happening today. Gay people are demanding anti-discrimination laws that will protect them as a minority.  And it's all because of the growing assumption that people are born gay.  "After all," the argument goes, "Should we punish people simply because of the way they were born?  Of course not.  God made them that way, right?"

Here's the problem.  People are not born gay.  It's a bad idea.  A false assumption.  A myth.  And our entire culture is shifting because of a lie.  No "gay gene" has ever been discovered.  In fact, many people who once lived a homosexual lifestyle have repented and are now living a straight lifestyle -- happily.  As well, identical twins have the exact same genetic makeup, yet they don't always have the same sexual orientation.

But the argument shouldn't stop there.  It needs to go further.  Even if it could be proven that people are born with a homosexual orientation, that doesn't mean that homosexual behavior should be protected by the law.  If it could be proven that some people are born with a sexual attraction for animals, or for children, that doesn't mean that their behavior should be protected by the law.  It would be concluded that they have a mental illness, and they would be in need of therapy.  In fact, since the primary purpose of sexuality is to reproduce, and homosexual behavior doesn't fulfill that function, then why aren't those in the field of psychology and psychiatry treating it as a mental illness?

If you accept the assumption that people are born gay, then the consequence will be laws protecting homosexuals as a minority.  And as soon as it becomes against the law to discriminate against gays, then people of faith lose their religious liberty.  As soon as you say it is against the law for a Christian baker to refuse to service a gay wedding, then the Christian baker loses her religious liberty.  And as soon as our society treats sexual orientation the same as race and gender, then our society will begin to demonize people of faith who have moral and religious objections against it.  And that's exactly what is happening in our culture.  It is permissible, even admirable to discriminate against religious people who have moral objections to homosexuality, but it is hateful and unlawful to discriminate against someone because of their homosexual behavior.

Homosexuality must not be treated as a genetic or biological issue.  There is no proof of a gay gene, and there is evidence of the opposite.  It must be treated as a moral issue, because it is a behavioral choice.  Even if there was a gay gene, homosexual behavior is still a choice, as opposed to race or gender.  None of us are forced to act according to our desires or proclivities.  Regardless of our feelings, we are responsible to do what is right.  Since homosexual behavior is a choice, it must be treated as a moral issue.  As such, those who have a moral, religious, and conscientious objection to homosexual behavior must be protected and respected.

It is the worst kind of tyranny, hatred, bigotry, and intolerance to force people of faith to disobey God and violate their consciences.  Religious liberty must not be sacrificed on the altar of erotic liberty.

People of faith, big elections are coming up in October -- state and parish.  We must talk to our neighbors, we must get to the polls, and we must vote for religious liberty.  Anyone who wants to put erotic liberty before religious liberty is an enemy to God and must be soundly defeated.
