You Can Understand the End Times: What Will Happen When Jesus Comes Back?
Christians believe that Jesus died, rose again, and will one day return. But after that, there is disagreement about what will happen when Christ returns. Of the different end times perspectives, I am an amillennialist, and this is what I believe will happen when Christ comes back.
If you will hover over the Scripture references, you will see that it is clear that that these things will all happen when Christ returns, not many years later. This is in contrast with dispensationalism, which teaches that there will be a secret rapture of the church, then seven years of tribulation, and then the Second Coming, and then Christ will reign physically on earth for 1,000 literal years, and then He will carry out the final judgment and create the new heavens and earth. I don't see any biblical support for this view. In other words, my position is that when Christ comes back (not after) He will give us our new bodies, defeat His enemies, carry out the judgment, and create the new heavens and earth.
- When Christ comes back, He will bring with Him all of the Christian souls who have died (1 Thess 4:13-18).
- The whole world will see His descent, including all those who have died, who will rise from their graves (Rev 1:7; Jn 5:28-30).
- While still in the air, the Christian souls descending with Him will be transformed and receive their resurrection bodies, and the Christians who are still alive on the earth will rise to meet Christ in the air, and they too will be transformed (1 Thess 4:13-18; 1 Jn 3:2; 1 Cor 15:52). This is what some refer to as the rapture, but it's not going to be a secret rapture, and Christians aren't going to be taken away to heaven; they are going to meet Christ in the air, be transformed, and then continue the descent with Christ to the earth.
- When Christ lands on earth, He will defeat His enemies, sit on the throne to judge the living and the dead, and create a new heavens and a new earth where we will live with Him forever (2 Thess 1:9-10; 2:8; Jn 5:28-30; 1 Peter 3:10-13; Rev 22:3-5).
