Jesus, Sexuality, and Gender

LGBT activists often claim that Jesus never said anything about homosexuality or gender.  They say this with such passion and volume that many Christians have been persuaded.  But they must have overlooked His words in Matthew 19:4-9.  This is one of the most famous, most beautiful, and richest passages in the entire Bible.  In just a few short sentences Jesus spoke clearly about so many of the questions that we have today.  When asked about divorce, Jesus went back to the creation story in Genesis -- to God's created order.  We should do the same when facing fundamental questions about humanity.
  1. Where did we come from?  People were created by God, not evolved from apes (Mt 19:4).
  2. How many genders are there?  There are only two genders -- male and female (Mt 19:4).
  3. Can you change your gender?  No.  God created you as either male or female -- He decided before you were born, and to change your gender is to reject His plan for your life (Mt 19:4).
  4. Does God approve of same-sex marriage?  No.  Marriage is the union of a male and a female -- a man and his wife (Mt 19:4-5).
  5. Does the Bible endorse polygamy?  No.  Marriage is the union of ONE man and ONE woman -- "a man will... be joined to his wife, and the two will become one flesh" (Mt 19:5).
  6. Is it okay to have sex outside of marriage?  No.  Sex is only for married couples.  The two "become one flesh" only after they have been joined in marriage (Mt 19:5).
  7. Is it okay to practice homosexuality?  No.  Sex is only for the context of heterosexual marriage (Mt 19:4-5).
  8. Is it okay to get a divorce?  No.  Marriage is a lifelong union (Mt 19:6).  The only allowance for divorce is unrepentant sexual immorality (Mt 19:6-9).
