Do Not Misuse God's Name

This past Sunday we studied the third commandment, "Do not misuse the name of the Lord your God, because the Lord will not leave anyone unpunished who misuses his name (Ex 20:7)."

How can you make sure to obey this commandment?

1. First, do not speak about God or the things of God without reference to Him.  
2. Second, do not speak about God or the things of God without proper reverence.  
3. Third, only speak about God if you are praising, praying, or preaching/teaching.

The bottom line is to honor God's name as holy (Mt 6:9).  Speech about God and the things of God should be set apart from all other kinds of talk.  It's God-talk, and it should only be used with the utmost reverence and care.
