Marriage, Not Cohabitation, Leads To Happiness
In a January 2018 article in the Wall Street Journal, Susan Pinker said that happiness is tied to marriage and not to cohabitation. The headline of the article was, "For Happiness That Lasts, Take Vows." Pinker cites research by the Journal of Happiness Studies.
A professor cited in the research said, “It’s good to know that someone has your back. That level of commitment, formalized by a ritual and a legal document, may be one reason why the advantages of marriage trump those of just living together."
This study is especially relevant to parents. In a culture in which more and more people are putting off marriage for as long as possible, or avoiding it altogether, and where more and more people are living together before and instead of marriage, be sure to regularly remind your children that there is scientific evidence proving the benefits of marriage over cohabitation. God's way is best! Marriage is one of God's best blessings.
