Discovering Your Purpose in Life
1 Corinthians 8:6 "yet for us there is one God, the Father. All things are from him, and we exist for him. And there is one Lord, Jesus Christ. All things are through him, and we exist through him."
It is important to know your purpose in life -- the reason you are here on this planet.
- Knowing your purpose helps you to make good choices. It helps you know how to invest your time, your money, your energy, and your talents.
- Knowing that you are not an accident; you are not here by chance; life is not random; this gives you a sense of significance and self-worth.
- Knowing your purpose is essential for success. True success is not just achieving your goals, but achieving the right goals. The only way you can know the right goals is by knowing your purpose.
- Knowing your purpose is the only way to make the most of your life. If you work tirelessly all your life climbing the ladder of success and achievement only to find out that your ladder was leaning against the wrong wall, then you have wasted your life.
How do we discover our purpose in life? Not through introspection or self-reflection. Not by looking inward. "The heart is more deceitful than anything else, and incurable -- who can understand it (Jer 17:9)." We cannot discover our purpose by asking others. If they do not know their own purpose, how would they know yours? One of the dangers of not knowing your purpose is that other people will try to force one on you, and usually it has to do with helping them fulfill their purpose. The way to discover your purpose is to ask your Maker. Your Maker is the only one who knows why you are here, because He put you here. And if He put you here, then there is a reason for your existence.
1 Corinthians 8:6 says that there is "one God, the Father. All things are from him." There is a God, and He made you. You are not here by accident or chance. You are not the product of millions of years of random mutations. God made you just the way you are. He created you. "For it was you who created my inward parts; you knit me together in my mother's womb. I will praise you because I have been remarkably and wondrously made. Your works are wondrous, and I know this very well (Ps 139:13-14)." Since God God made you, then you must go to Him to find your purpose.
1 Corinthians 8:6 goes on to say, "All things are from him, and we exist for him." This is your purpose. You were created by God and for God. God has a purpose for you. A plan for your life. It is to know and glorify Him. To serve Him. To walk with Him. To grow in Him. To praise Him. To love Him. You can discover the specifics of God's purpose for your life by studying the Bible, God's word.
Starting today, stop wasting your life. Stop wasting your time, energy, and resources. Invest your life in what matters. In what counts. Live on purpose -- your true purpose. You exist for God. Give yourself to Him. To knowing, loving, glorifying, and serving Him. Everything else will false into place.
