It's Time for the SBC to Condemn CRT

This month more than 13,000 messengers will attend the annual Southern Baptist Convention to decide on the direction of nation's largest Protestant denomination (of which Church Acadiana is a member).  In the minds of many (if not most), the most important items of business will be passing a resolution to condemn Critical Race Theory, and electing a new president.

Critical Race Theory is the latest unbiblical and destructive ideology to infiltrate the government, the media, Hollywood, Corporate America, and Big Tech.  It is also known as "Wokeness."  Among the tenets of CRT, it asserts that America is systemically racist and needs to be completely torn down and rebuilt be those who are woke.  All white people are inherently racist and privileged, even if you can't point to a specific racist behavior.  All disparities in the black community are the result of and evidence of racism.  People should be judged by the color of their skin, not the content of their character.  Your race is the most important thing about you.  And I could go on!  CRT is so dangerous that in 2019 President Trump issued an executive order directing all federal agencies to stop teaching and pushing the theory in their training sessions.  Just this month the Georgia Board of Education became the first state board to adopt a resolution to ban the teaching of the tenets of CRT.

Somehow proponents of CRT have found themselves in key positions of leadership within the SBC, and have used their influence to push it on the convention.  At the convention in 2019, Resolution 9 was passed which affirmed CRT as a useful analytical tool to explain how race has and continues to function in society.  This was before most people had even heard of CRT.  Since then a growing number of pastors and leaders and laypeople within the SBC have been speaking against CRT and preparing to fight against it at the 2021 annual convention.

After the passing of Resolution 9, the Conservative Pastor's Network was formed to lead the denomination away from CRT and back to a belief in the sufficiency of Scripture.  If you haven't already, consider joining.

On November 20, 2020, the SBC seminary presidents issued a joint statement that "affirmation of Critical Race Theory, Intersectionality and any version of Critical Theory is incompatible with the Baptist Faith & Message."

So far nearly 60 resolutions have been submitted to the Resolutions Committee asking SCB messengers to condemn critical race theory.  One of these resolutions was submitted by Mike Stone, the pastor of Emmanuel Baptist Church in Blackshear, Georgia.  He is one of three nominees hoping to become the next president of the SBC, and he's got my vote.

I've heard of some black pastors who are threatening to leave the denomination if it passes a resolution against CRT.  That's fine by me.  CRT is racist, and it only breeds division and hurts our gospel witness.  It detrimental to racial reconciliation.

For the first time in our young church's history we are sending messengers to the convention this month.  The SBC has self-corrected a number of times, and we are praying that it can self-correct again on the issue of Critical Race Theory.  Please pray!
