What to do if Your Love for Jesus Has Grown Cold

Of all the commandments, loving God is the most important.  Loving God is what fuels obedience.  Loving God is necessary to experience God's best for your life.  Loving God will make you happier than anything else.

So what do you do if your love has grown cold?  To rekindle your love for Jesus, focus your attention on who He is and what He has done.

This is one of the reasons we worship in song at church.  We worship because it is commanded (Eph 5:19; Col 3:16).  We worship in response to His goodness and greatness (Rom 12:1).  But we also worship because as we focus on who He is and what He has done, our love for Him grows stronger and stronger.

In other words, worship is good for us.  It helps stay on fire for God.  It helps our love grow.  Worship is not about us.  But it is good for us.

God is amazing.  He is easy to love and adore, but only if you take the time to focus on who He is and what He has done.  The longer you take your eyes off of Him, the more your love will grow cold.

Here are three practical ways to rekindle your love for God:

  1. Worship with all your heart when we gather for church.  Arrive early so you don't miss any worship time.  And when you worship, do so with the same enthusiasm that you cheer for the LSU Tigers or the New Orleans Saints.
  2. Worship in your car.  Purchase some good worship CDs and use your drive time to worship God.  I recommend Passion, Hillsong, Kari Jobe, and All Sons & Daughters.
  3. Worship in your quiet time.  Every morning when you pray, don't just ask for things; spend time in worship.  That's why I love the prayer acronym A.C.T.S. (Adoration; Confession; Thanksgiving; and Supplication).  Adoration is all about praising and adoring God for who He is and what He has done. And then thanksgiving is thanking God for the many blessings that He has given you.
Do this and it will rekindle your love for God.  Do it consistently and it will cause your love to grow stronger and stronger.
