Fail: Lafayette City Council Proclaims June Pride Month

After Mayor Josh Guillory rejected the request to proclaim June Pride month, the Lafayette City Council decided to do it anyway.  Four our of five council members voted in favor of the measure.  Only Andy Naquin voted against it.

Andy Naquin is the only councilman who should not be voted out of office.  First, this is a violation of a city ordinance, and the council members are well aware of it.  The city ordinance says that only the mayor can make a proclamation, yet the city council deliberately ignored the law.  Andy Naquin raised this concern, but was ignored.  What does it say about our leaders that they are willing to openly break the law?

Second, this proclamation is a great offense to the majority of people in Lafayette who have deeply held religious beliefs about the sinfulness of homosexuality.  We love our LGBT neighbors, but we cannot celebrate what God condemns.  This proclamation is supposed to represent all of us, but it does not.  It only represents a small fraction of our city, while offending the majority.  As conservative Christians, we know that some of our beliefs are offensive, such as the belief in the sinfulness of the LGBT lifestyle.  We certainly would not request that the city council set aside one month to celebrate that belief, because we know that it doesn't represent everyone, and that it is highly controversial.  This is nothing short of an abuse of power to force everyone to affirm the homosexual lifestyle.

Homosexuals do not need their own month.  They should be treated with respect and love, even by those who disagree with their lifestyle, but they should not be given special treatment.  People should not be forced or pressured to accept what their faith rejects.  It is possible to love and respect someone without agreeing with them and affirming their behavior.  Homosexuals are not in danger of persecution today, but Christians are.  While homosexuals are celebrated and congratulated for their sexual deviancy, Christians are condemned and canceled for their religious beliefs.

I encourage you to contact Andy Naquin to thank him for doing the right thing (AndyNaquin@lafayettela.gov).  This is a reminder that truth and righteous are not determined by a vote.
