Greek Word Study | 5015: troubling (tarasso)
Ridderbos says, “Trouble means, in this connection, to bring about spiritual schism and an obscuration of the insight of faith.” (Ridderbos, Galatians, Gal 1:7.)
Hendriksen says, “Literally this verb means to shake, stir up, trouble, agitate… Figuratively, as here, it has reference to upsetting the mind and/or heart. Thus Herod was shaken, deeply disturbed, when he heard about the birth of a king of the Jews; the disciples were troubled when they imagined they were looking at a ghost; and Zechariah when he saw an angel.” (Hendriksen, New Testament Commentary, Galatians, Galatians 1:7.)
The MacArthur Study Bible (Gal 1:7) says, “the word means to shake back and forth, meaning to agitate or stir up. Here, it refers to the deep emotional disturbance the Galatian believers experienced.”
